Down in numbers, Cobras’ season wraps up

Brian McLean

TACOMA, Wash. – Facing the possibility of playing short-handed in back-to-back weeks, the Seattle-Tacoma Cobras elected to conclude their inaugural season of Professional Developmental Football League play this week.

Sea-Tac overmatched a semi-pro opponent and split league contests against Utah and Portland this spring. Two other teams that were set to play in the American Developmental Conference were unable to keep their league commitments and chose to try again in 2014. The league also hopes it can bring on several teams from the [...]

Boltz’ air attack eclipses Sea-Tac Cobras

Brian McLean

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Seattle-Tacoma Cobras were limited in numbers Saturday night, and the Portland Boltz exploited it over and over again.

Boltz quarterback Russell Schneider completed 30 of 39 passes for 538 yards and eight touchdowns to lead Portland (4-0, 2-0 PDFL) in a 56-40 victory in Professional Developmental Football League play at Lincoln High School's Mike Walsh Field.

It was an all-out air attack for most of the night as Sea-Tac's Justin Walz countered when he finished 21-for-35 passing with 362 [...]

Athletic tight end makes switch from basketball to football

Brian McLean

Andre Hardy Jr. hopes he can be the latest in a trend of athletic big men to make the transition from college basketball to professional football.

The 6-foot-5, 253-pound power forward from Cal State Fullerton always had both sports on his mind, and he got an initial shot following a private workout he held for about eight teams prior to last April's NFL draft.

The Oakland Raiders signed him and brought him in for rookie camp, but it came with [...]

Former NFL running back Mike Bell coming to Cobras’ backfield

Brian McLean

Mike Bell learned to deal with adversity while he was a star running back at the University of Arizona, and he's used that experience ever since.

Bell, the third all-time rushing leader for the Wildcats, went through three different head coaches and four different position coaches while he was at the school in Tucson, Ariz.

"It was crazy," said Bell, an NFL-type talent who signed last week with the Seattle-Tacoma Cobras. "There was so much change over time, such a [...]

Cobras quarterback back in states after European success

Brian McLean

Football is becoming a universal language, but Justin Walz has needed a translator for the past couple years. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound quarterback went to Europe after his college career and played in both Poland and the Czech Republic.

"Football over in Europe is kind of like soccer for us," Walz said. "But the sport is growing."

So are his leadership skills.

Walz, 25, will be asked to take the Seattle-Tacoma Cobras' offense under his wing, although that won't be a [...]
