Everett Corley has been big all his life, but he's only been able to play football for some of it.
The 6-foot-10, 400-pound lineman didn't play until he was in high school, although that wasn't due to a lack of interest.
"I was always too big for my age group," Corley said after practice last week, just his fourth day with the Seattle-Tacoma Cobras.
Corley, 24, was at a crossroads in his career when the Professional Developmental Football League team called [...]
Off the field, Nick Thurston is quick with a smile. On it, he's anything but cordial.
"If you don't know who made the tackle," the linebacker joked following a Seattle-Tacoma Cobras practice last week, "just give it to me."
At 6-foot-1, 255 pounds, Thurston will be in on a lot of them this spring, his first with the Professional Developmental Football League. Originally from Oakland, Calif., Thurston played at the City College of San Francisco and finished his college career at the [...]
There's a certain beauty that goes along with the execution of a perfect block. It's not all about how much a lineman can bench press.
"People don't realize how much work it is," said Doug Palmer, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound guard who joined the Seattle-Tacoma Cobras on March 16. "You have to break down different things. Technique beats strength."
As training camp opened for the Professional Developmental Football League team, Palmer was among the Cobras who were coming together for their first field-related [...]
Omari Crittenden grew up in central California, and he insists he didn't know anything about the prowess of the USC Trojans' football program. The same one that won four Rose Bowls, claimed two national championships and had three Heisman Trophy winners.
And that was just the 2000s, a small slice of Trojan tradition.
"It blows my mind to this day," said Crittenden, a 6-foot, 195-pound defensive back who signed with the Seattle-Tacoma Cobras earlier this month. "How did I not know?"
USC actually [...]
Jason Jones had a choice to make. For the first time in his life, he was struggling with academics, and a series of events had endangered his budding football career.
Hurricane Katrina devastated southeastern Louisiana just two weeks after the 6-foot-2, 305-pound defensive tackle stepped on the campus at Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, La.
Jones' parents, who live 15 minutes outside of downtown New Orleans in Reserve, lost power for two weeks following the 2005 event, but they were spared from [...]
Not many high school football players can say they were teammates with both Reggie Bush and Alex Smith.
Ken Cornist, who signed with the Sea-Tac Cobras on Monday, is on that list.
The San Diego-area native was in the same backfield as Bush, the former Heisman Trophy winner at USC and No. 2 overall NFL Draft pick who recently signed with the Detroit Lions. And Cornist said he was the go-to guy for Smith, who wound up leading the Utah Utes to [...]
When the Seattle-Tacoma Cobras huddle up thing spring, they'll have a natural leader in Mario Haley, a four-year veteran who is determined to help his teammates succeed.
Haley, a member of the all-Professional Developmental Football League team in 2009, has been with the Cobras since the beginning. He's fought through personal adversity and inspires others with his ability to captivate on and off the field.
"I've had struggle in my life," he said. "I had to grow up fast, seeing people look [...]
